The Competence Center for Technological Development of the Fuel and Energy Complex of the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation based on the results of the meeting on December 16, 2025 of the Working Group "Geological Exploration, Well Construction, Development and Operation of Oil and Gas Fields" of the Scientific and Technical Council under the Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation S.E. Tsivilev reviewed and highly appreciated promising areas of research and development in the field of the development of thermochemical methods for increasing oil recovery – Multifluid thermal technology (MTT) of "Oil Resource" LLC (part of Kirillitsa JSC Group of Companies). The technology is recognized as fully consistent with the technological priorities of the Energy Strategy of the Russian Federation for the period up to 2050.
The MTT technology is aimed at cost-effective involvement in industrial production of the potential of hard-to-recover reserves that are inaccessible to existing methods of increasing oil recovery. Unlike the widely used complete voidage replacement (CVR) technology which allows for the extraction of no more than 30% of oil, the MTT technology is able to increase the cost-effective ORF (oil recovery factor) up to 60%. Given the growing share of hard-to-recover oil reserves in the country's total production, the introduction of new efficient technologies is becoming critical to ensure energy security and realize export potential.
The principle of operation of the MTT technology is the injection of supercritical water (over 374 °C) with catalysts under high pressure into an oil-bearing reservoir which initiates the process of intra-reservoir conversion and leads to an increase in the flow rate of wells and the total recoverability of reserves. The economic effect of the large-scale implementation of the MTT technology is expected to be significant and will help compensate for the long-term decline in production at traditional fields.
The Competence Center for Technological Development of the Fuel and Energy Complex of the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation confirmed its interest in cooperation with the Kirillitsa JSC Group of Companies in the field of development of MTT technology and the formation of an industry methodological landscape. The introduction of innovation into industrial operation is an important step towards fulfilling the objectives of Russia's long-term Energy strategy and strengthening the technological sovereignty of the oil and gas complex in the face of external constraints.
For reference: The Competence Center for Technological Development of the Fuel and Energy Complex of the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation (FEC CCTD) was established in 2019 at the initiative of the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation together with the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation in order to facilitate the implementation of projects to create domestic equipment and technologies for the needs of the fuel and energy complex. The FEC CCTD is working to solve urgent problems caused by depletion of reserves in traditional oil and gas production regions. The mission of the center is to promote the development and implementation of innovations in the Russian fuel and energy complex.
